After setting sail for Spain, the Maravillas strayed off course in a terrible winter storm and rammed another ship in her convoy.  She sank on that violent stormy night in January 1656, taking 600 crew members and passengers to their deaths along with her treasures to the bottom of the sea off Little Bahama Bank. (not far from Florida).  The Maravillas was thought to have one of the most valuable treasures of gold, silver and precious gems of all ships ever to sail from New Spain.
